The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the future generations would be able to read them. However, many of the words were being replaced by foreign words, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning, Toto produced products to meet the growing demand for modern, brand new urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use automation to control production,

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve its customers and increase profit. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.
Toto continues to invent on the toilet technology. The most recent toilet features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water for its manufacturing process,

Before the formation of Toto members of the group did session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band however, it's actually a pretty straightforward rock outfit. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster but not without its problems. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release the top single or they would drop the album. Luckily for Toto, they did and they did it with the aid of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experiences, as the band members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album opens up hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier performances.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed a few months later, and the group went on an extensive world tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
