Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to support it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
