About Toto
Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name around the globe.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is a rock group from America who achieved their greatest success in the 1980s. Founded by seasoned session musicians, the band has sold over 40 million albums around the world.
The first toto album was the self-titled Toto, released in 1978. The album was a huge hit and launched the band into international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 more albums, all of which have also been hits.
Toto composed their first and sole film score in 1984 for the film Dune. This was a huge undertaking, and the entire group had to be involved. The album that came out, Kingdom of Desire, was a record that also had a great success. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen, who was a member of Le Roux. The band pushed forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of songs such as "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and stepped away from the stage. The break gave each member of the band the opportunity to pursue their individual projects. In 1996, the band reformed for a tour and album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all the original band members were on stage.
The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared on stage at once. Following this, the band broke up again. Toto came back together for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise money for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all of Toto's original members performed together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
Tours
Toto has been one of the most popular rock groups for more than three decades, scoring massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." With a variety of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world rhythms, soul and jazz, the group continues to please fans with their anthemic arena rock.
The band experienced several setbacks throughout their final years, despite their popularity. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence for health reasons. Shem von Schröeck was brought in to replace him, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to break up for a couple of years. But, the group recommenced touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return to the band's top form and the tour that accompanied it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
Toto's music is as relevant today as it was during the 1970s and 1980s, as it has gained new audiences with each generation. Their success has made Toto a permanent fixture of pop culture. Their live shows are always filled with energy and excitement.
