After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
