About Toto
Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word meaning "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour helped them become a household name around the world.
After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It's a change from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
