Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current philosophical theories of pragmatics concentrate on semantics. Brandom for instance is a focus on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).
Others take a more comprehensive approach to pragmatics, like relevance theory, which seeks to study the underlying of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a listener. This view tends to ignore other elements of pragmatics, like epistemic discussions on truth.
What exactly is pragmatism?
Pragmatism is a philosophical outlook that provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce was the first to introduce it and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It had a profound influence on the fields of inquiry from theology of philosophy to philosophy of science but also on ethics, politics and philosophy of language. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.
The underlying principle of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, which is a guideline for defining the significance of hypotheses by tracing their 'practical consequences that they have for specific situations. This is the basis for an epistemological view that is a type of 'inquiry epistemology' based on inquiry, and an anti Cartesian explanation of the rules that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists were largely divided on the issue of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a scientific philosophy that focuses on a monism of truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).

Despite these difficulties, pragmatism is still growing in popularity across the globe. It is an important third alternative to the continental and analytic philosophical traditions and has many practical applications. It is a rapidly growing field of inquiry.
